Bill,

Thanks for the comment - your protocol was just fine. I am curious still as to who actually dictates policy on housing and rentals. Typically it's the county, and I wonder if it's possible for a community to supersede county law. While I can absolutely understand you being upset about the circumstances you described, doesn't Big Canoe already have regulations in place to handle this? I know that last year we had some folks carrying on into the wee hours of the morning, and I finally called security. Shortly thereafter, the noise ended. From my experience, our Public Safety group has handled these situations very well. Are they failing to handle this for you? Is the situation just too out of control? I'd like to hear more about this Bill. Thanks again for the comment.

This is my first time leaving a remark so please excuse me if I am not following the proper protocol. I live across the street from one the “hotels” that is operating in Big Canoe. All summer it has been like living across the street from a Freaknick celebration every week. The renters are paying a high price for renting the house and could care less about abiding by Big Canoe’s regulations much less those of the county or state. The owner is well aware of the problems but has either been unable to or doesn’t choose to bring them into line. During the summer there were weeks where 35+ were spending the night. Parking on both sides of our dead end street, trash scattered throughout the neighborhood, loud noise, fires in the owner’s fire pit are a weekly occurrence. Last year the owner claims $70,000+ in rentals. This is not a small operation. It and others like it must be brought under control before the entirety of Big Canoe is adversely affected.

I am not opposed to an occasional renter. Neither are my neighbors. I believe that it should be limited to a maximum number and not impose any undue strain on the neighborhood and the community as a whole.

“Bearhaven” is concerned about one bad apple. If memory serves, they are capable of spoiling the whole barrel.

In all situations, there is an exceptionally bad apple but couldn't this be addressed on a case by case basis. Why throw everyone under the bus because of the "few". As for me this is a investment that needs to be kept up and anyone who would rent to 24 people are just asking for trouble.

Thanks for the comment Don. I hope to get some more info on this soon. Wouldn't the county code dictate policy on this?

If you do a search for "Big Canoe Rentals" it will turn up an eye-opening window as to what goes on in Big Canoe as to renting vs a hotel operation. There are some places advertising up to 24 people can sleep here!
What this does to the neighborhood in the case of parking is to overflow the neighborhood with cars parked everywhere plus loud and noisy parties. Several years ago we had one of these rentals on our street and it was a mess. Also the effect re septic systems can have an adverse result with overuse .
I don't think anyone objects to an occasional weekly rental by a family but I am not for the abuse one gets from 12-24 people and cars all over the place. If you live near one of these let's hear from you!
